Group meetings are Friday 4 pm in LISB 417.
Group meeting itinerary:
1) Safety
2) Group business
3) Literature review:
The week after you present about your research you will moderate a short (10-20 min) discussion regarding a paper of your choice relevant either to the group as a whole or specifically to your project. For example: Lena will present her research on Friday, July 12. On or before Wednesday, July 17th she will email her selected paper to the group. At the beginning of group meeting on Friday, July 19th she will moderate a short discussion of the selected paper. After the discussion, Jason will present his research. An so on…
In order for this to work, you need to do the following things:
- Choose the paper you wish to discuss at group meeting and email it to the group no later than Wednesday of the week you will be moderating.
- Read the paper and the SI (if any) before group meeting.
- Be prepared to visually project either the paper or the figures from the paper for the discussion.
Note: You are not necessarily expected to be an expert on the subject covered in your paper. It should be relevant to the group or your project, but it is not required that it fall into both of those categories. You should be prepared to moderate a discussion regarding the paper assuming that others in the group have already read it (i.e. we will not be reading the paper together at group meeting). You should assume that others may not have dug deeply into the SI and you should know what is in there in case it becomes helpful during the discussion.
4) Research presentation:
Prepare ~45 – 60 min formal presentation for the group. This presentation should include current research goals, worked up data, hypotheses, research conclusions, and future work directions. There is no need to include a big picture “We are in an energy crisis” introduction. You should however put your research into context with a small introduction focusing on current literature that explains the specific motivation for your project for visiting undergraduate or graduate students.
Caveat: As happens occasionally (e.g. after you go to a conference, if you’ve been writing for a while), you may not have enough new results to justify presenting at group meeting. Don’t fret! You can opt to do an extensive review of a relevant paper instead! If you choose this option, please email the paper to the group no later than Tuesday of the week you will present to give everyone some extra time to read it carefully. Again, be prepared to moderate a detailed discussion of the literature. If you choose this option, you do not need to do a brief literature discussion the following week, but you may consider still having an individual research meeting with Shannon if appropriate.

Shannon is available for weekly individual research meetings during the week. Contact Janet or Shannon directly to schedule a meeting.

Group Meeting Batting Order:
This list represents the order of group meeting presenters. If other events prevent an individual from presenting on their week, they will be scheduled to present at the following group meeting. Also, the week you give group meeting you are not expected to have an individual meeting with Shannon. The week after you give group meeting, you are up for a quick lit presentation at the beginning of group meeting (and you should also bring snacks if you can afford it). Please contact Michaela (mburke4@uoregon.edu) if you would like to schedule a presentation during group meeting that varies from the batting order.
